Roofing Materials: What Goes on Your Roof and Why
Quality materials are one of the three things we will not compromise on. Here is what goes into a Hoff roof, in plain terms.
For pitched roofs
- Architectural asphalt shingles: layered shingles that are thicker and more wind resistant than flat three-tab shingles.
- Synthetic underlayment: the water-shedding layer between the deck and the shingles.
- Ice and water shield: a self-sealing membrane at eaves and valleys, where water backs up.
- Metal drip edge: keeps water off the fascia and out from under the roof edge.
- Starter strip and hip and ridge caps: made for those positions, not cut from field shingles.
- Flashing and pipe boots: the metal and rubber that seal every joint and penetration.

For flat and low-slope roofs
- EPDM: a black rubber membrane in large sheets with few seams.
- TPO: a white membrane with heat-welded seams that reflects sunlight.
- Modified bitumen: an asphalt-based sheet applied in layers, tough enough for foot traffic.
What we do not install
We do not install slate, copper, metal, tile or cedar shake roofs. We would sooner do two kinds of roof very well than seven kinds adequately.
When you get your estimate, we will name the exact products we plan to use so you can look them up and compare them against any other bid.
